the concept of the design was taken off Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam... my personal reason for the energy able to stay outside the barrel is a mystery right now but!!!
in Zeta Gundam there are two type of energy Minovsky and Mega Particle...

-Mega particle meant for range energy weapons such as the energy rifle

-Minovsky particles meant for beam sabers and melee weapons that use Minovsky energy
the MSZ-006 rifle acts exactly like a rifle... however, the hollow "FLASH HIDER" in the rifle is programmed as a "Minovsky unit"...
which is the result for the beam saber... the switch for the saber mode and rifle mode is like fire selector rifle it is easy to access... or another way is to simply swing the rifle... real fast then the blade activates...
